The Gift of Empathy

As a psychologist, I am consistently in awe of my patients’ lives. Their stories of grief and resilience, hope and fear, anger and forgiveness, trauma and survival, all share common threads in the tapestry of our human experience. If providing therapy has taught me anything it’s this: we are all wounded.
There is no way to fully live our lives without eventually encountering pain. When someone is hurting, we may find ourselves at a loss for what to say. Worse, we can rush to consolation, mistaking sympathy for empathy.
